A restaurant by the name of “Handsome Her” WAS a feminist vegan restaurant from Melbourne Australia. I say WAS because they had to close down, not that it had anything to do with their main attraction, asking men to pay 18% more money because of the gender wage gap.
The best restaurants are the ones that charge half of the population more and discriminate. If you aren’t doing that, you are out of touch and need to do some soul searching. Also don’t serve meat.
It’s been a wild journey to say the least. When we opened Handsome Her in 2017, we expected that perhaps we might make a stir through our brazen public discussions of structural inequality and oppression. The man tax blew up the internet, an idea that we didn’t think was all too radical, yet the way the world responded showed us how fragile masculinity is and solidified the necessity for us to confront and dismantle patriarchy. We were just one little tiny shop on Sydney Rd that was trying to carve out a swathe of space to prioritise women and women’s issues, and suddenly we became the punching bag of Melbourne and the internet. Yes, we are the evil, discriminatory, man-hating dykes who charge men more when didn’t you know the wage gap doesn’t even exist!? Meanwhile gentlemen’s social clubs live on and strong around Melbourne and the world over…
…While it is a shame to lose the physical space (and we understand how essential it is for women and lesbians to hold space), we leave knowing that the communities we have made transcend the trendy vegan café on Sydney Rd, Brunswick. We look forward to continuing Handsome Her in a variety of other, more creative ways and expanding our efforts to drive change with flexibility and mobility throughout Australia.

Apparently, one week out of each month they would ask men to pay an extra 18% because women get paid $.80 for every $1 a man earns. There are studies out there that proclaim this is fact and even so, there are reasons for that (examples, time spent at work, time taken off for pregnancy etc.). The best argument against the wage gap I’ve heard is that all business savvy people would just suddenly hire ALL women because they could get the same work done with less money. I’ll let Joe Rogan take the rest of they pay gap issue. ***Strong Language***
It could also just be a contributing factor, how many bad business practices are they deploying? We can easily check out some of there less savory reviews from Google.
Food proportions and quality was below average considering the price $20-25 a meal. Presentation was great through. A bit of a weird vibe to the cafe with the sign for the male tax a bit off putting although I don’t think they charged my husband.
Staff were friendly, but very busy so took a long time to come back to us about ingredients to food allergy questions and request for a high chair.
I ordered for the first time through Ubereats and was very unhappy with what I got. Firstly, my main meal, the Ramen, was completely missing. My entree, the Steamed Duck Bun, was tasteless and had barely any filling or sauce. I do not recommend this place.
This place is garbage, didnt know gender discrimination was so acceptable especially from “tolerant feminists.” I can’t wait till you’re forced to close because of no business and then try to blame the patriarchy LOL
21% surcharge if your male!! Literally the most stupid thing I’ve heard of.
Surely that’s against the law? Whilst totally understanding the point they are trying to make. It’s just not fair to say that men earn more. Yes. At a certain level in a company I have no doubt they do. But the average person in the street who had a regular retail or office job is likely to be earning the same as their female counterpart.
It’s a real shame that this kind of business exists. Rather than making it an optional choice go everyone they are basically saying that because we can’t change the companies who make those decisions we will impact the average worker who really has no say in the matter. Surely this is exactly the kind of discrimination that we are all fighting against. Imagine the uproar if they had a Chinese person tax and they taxed all the Chinese people in melbourne because there are more billionaires than any other country. It literally doesn’t make sense.
Oh, and they have a woman first policy!!! I mean I always though Australia was a little backward and racist but this is literally the most sexist policy I’ve heard and they would be the first to bang on about it if it was a men first policy! Oh, that’s right!! Thats exactly the type of policy that make sure men keep getting paid more. I think this place is doing more harm than good to be honest.
Rant over. Not worth wasting my time. I for one won’t be back and judging by the amount ($1100) they have raised for charity they don’t get many male customers anyway so they are obviously only getting the clientelle they want.
I’ll be making a complain to the commission and I advice everyone else to. Sexual discrimation shouldn’t be tolorated
Or maybe it was just because of the discrimination.
