It turns out that the Poway shooter wasn’t exactly stopped due to the border patrol agent (Jonathan Morales). However, I’m sure without him things would have gotten worse than it did. It seems more likely that God himself intervened and jammed the shooter’s gun! You could argue that God put Jonathan Morales there as an extra layer to catch the guy.
Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein lost his index finger from the shooter. Almog Peretz – 34 and Noya Dahan – 8 suffered shrapnel wounds. My sincerest condolences go out to Lori Gilbert Kaye and her family. In an even more heartbreaking story, it’s reported her husband conducted CPR on her and didn’t even realize it was her. People are also saying she jumped in the way to save the rabbi’s life.
He said he looked up on Saturday and saw a young man wearing sunglasses standing in front of him with a rifle. He said he lifted his hands and was shot. He says he lost his index finger. And then, Goldstein said, “miraculously the gun jammed.”
“It could have been a blood bath,” he said. “I don’t want to think of it.”
The reason the border patrol agent was at the synagogue was because the rabbi asked him to attend and remain armed. I won’t go into my monologue again, you can read that here, but I’m glad Jonathan Morales made the time to go.
“I had spoken to him in the past about coming to the synagogue armed because he’s trained, and I want trained security as much as possible,” Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein told CNN, speaking from a local hospital. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t afford to have an armed security officer at every service, so whenever we had extra help, we were grateful for it.”
Something else I missed during my initial post was that the shooter surprisingly turned himself in. He called the police and surrendered on a highway in nearby Rancho Bernardo. If you know any other information you’d like people to know, leave them in the comments!
