Tech Companies Know Better Than You

Twitter, the final holdout of the big tech companies, has finally banned Alex Jones and Infowars.  But that isn’t what we are going to talk about today.  I want to discuss what they are really doing when they ban people like Alex Jones from their platforms – They know better than you.  It is truly silly to ban people from, especially, Twitter, because they have mute and block buttons already, why does the company have to go that extra mile and erase people?  It makes no sense when you think of the “publisher” or “platform” problem they may soon face.  if they are publishers, they are responsible for everything content creators make and push on their sites.  So if someone tried to sue Twitter for something Alex Jones does, than Twitter would have to take responsibility and cover him under their legal umbrella.  So, as a publisher, it would make sense if they ban Infowars.  But as a platform, which is what Facebook, YouTube and Twitter claim to be, they are not there to police people and anything they do they are not responsible for.  Which is the way it should be, but does that give them the right to ban Infowars?  Absolutely, but it’s a mistake, they will lose the trust of people if they police content they disagree with, instead of letting us use the tools they give us, to either elevate them or block them.  They do this, because they know better than you.  Free speech needs to stay alive, and the big tech companies need to stay neutral, or our internet as we know it, is gone.

Infowars may be banned from the large services, but you can still find them.  They have a bitchute channel, or just go to infowars.com

Infowars Missing From Top Google Play?

What will happen when Infowars is banned from everything?

infowars

Huh, I guess I was right when I said banned things get more popular. Anyway, that isn’t the update to the Infowars purge. The newest update is that Google has now suppressed their app from appearing in the Top app. I didn’t realize Google didn’t know how to count…

infowars 3

Notice that the 3 is missing. Now if you search for the Infowars app, you can find it, and states it is number 2 in the News and Magazine category. Which may be confusing, but it was number 3 in ALL apps, and number 2 in News and Magazine.

infowars 2

As of getting ready to write this, Infowars appears to have been suppressed to the number 12 spot.

infowars 12

There you have it, Google Play is actively sabotaging apps due to their “views”. It is pretty damning to show how much they want to silent Infowars and Alex Jones. Media companies give Infowars a lot of credit for helping Trump get elected in 2016 (which they aren’t happy about), and it is quite a sight to see them suddenly ban him from nearly every platform right before an election. I don’t understand why they don’t see that banning a conspiracy theorist like this is not going to go well for them. Doesn’t school teach about the prohibition anymore?

UPDATE

I didn’t notice at first, but the number 10 app is missing as well.  Got me thinking that maybe this isn’t an Infowars thing.  It still could be, but then begs the question of what else isn’t showing, and why?

Alex Jones, the Latest Saga in the Speech Wars

Alex Jones, if you don’t know who he is… Well he is pretty nutty. He runs the website www.infowars.com, It’s a “news” website that often is just wildy wrong (sometimes he actually just shares news). I have seen quite a bit of his work, but its no surprise he gets labeled a conspiracy theorist. I’m sorry, if you can watch his talks about the frogs being gay and the President having weather weapons and believe it, you may have more problems than him.

I’m sure we can take Wikipedia’s take on Alex Jones as truth…

Ah, the alt-right label again. I have to stick up for anyone labeled “alt-right” or “far-right” because its a label that the media has adopted to discredit anyone. We will have to have a nice long talk about the alt-right. Well, lets get into the details.

August 5th, Apple removes Infowars from the podcast app for hate speech.

August 6th, Facebook removes Alex Jones pages for glorifying violence and using dehumanising language to describe trangender and, Muslims and immigrants.

August 6th, YouTube deletes the Infowars channel.

infowars

Why is this important? Because if they start to silence people, based on what they call “hate speech”, we are losing the battle for free speech. Hate speech to me, will not be hate speech to the next person, and even so, anyone should be able to say whatever they want to me. If I don’t like someones “hate speech”, I would just take my respect and values somewhere else.

How is this political left and right speech war going to go next. First the left took a swing and a hit against Roseanne for a “racist joke”. Then the right rebounds and strikes down James Gunn for “pedophilia jokes”. Then the left puts “white racist”, Sarah Jeong into the speech battlefield at the New York Times. Latest is the take down of Alex Jones, a giant conspiracy theorist with tons of followers, turning him into a martyr for “hate speech”.

We need to stop firing people for speech, especially jokes. Let the bad ideas come out, so we can chose for ourselves if we want to buy or ignore that product. Alex Jones is just another product to be pulled off the shelf and now we have no choice.

I want to finish this with a couple observations. First, all the big tech companies banned a conspiracy theorist, for different reasons, within a couple days. Second, banning things typically makes them more popular… Just saying.
